One of the biggest guitar festivals in Europe, the "World of Guitar" took place in Kaluga, Russia, on the 26th - 30th of May, 2014. Previous years have seen leading musicians from more than 30 countries take part in the festival. Among them were: Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, John Mclaughlin, Larry Coryell, Leo Brower, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito, to name but a few. This year's 17th annual festival was devoted to the memory of the late, great, Paco De Lucia, who passed from a heart attack on February 25, 2014. The festival began with a concert by American virtuoso guitarist, composer, and Grammy winner Steve Vai.  During a press conference before the performance Steve Vai emphasized the importance of the festival’s dedication in memory of Paco De Lucia. As Steve said, "I wasn't scheduled to appear on the same stage with Paco, due to our different styles, but Paco's contribution to music development for guitar can not be overestimated.  He was the real rebel and led a revolution, by connecting flamenco and jazz".
For his festival performance, Steve Vai prepared a special program consisting of his Greatest Hits(such as "The Attitude Song", "For the Love of God", "Fire Garden Suite"..) featuring "The Russian Philharmonic Orchestra", from Moscow, along with a rock band of Russia's most prominent guitarist, Roman Miroshnichenko. Steve Vai noted, "Roman is a magnificent guitarist and 'the real soldier' who has perfect feeling of my music along with  phenomenal technique". He also said of the symphonic orchestra members, "… real professionals and excellent people. I've played with many orchestras in the past, and sometimes there was not always the most positive reaction of "what to make of this guy who plays Rock 'n' Roll. But, they (the orchestra) proved it’s not only about themselves – they are all creative people, and despite having only one rehearsal, we came together as a cohesive team and did an excellent show!"
The format of Vai’s concert with the orchestra differs from his typical performances in stadiums or large halls with a rock band. The  show, with the accompaniment of an orchestra, according to the musician words, "has a warmer, softer atmosphere".
When questioned by journalists, as to what stages are more preferable to him, Steve answered that, for perception of his music the size of a stage is not important, "The main things are the notes and the communication with the audience".  And for this evening, the communication turned out very strong.  In the concert finale, the audience got up from their seats and gave non-stop applause as Mr. Vai played his encore…
